HOW TO GET A JOB IN THE MEDICAL CANNABIS INDUSTRY

It’s an exciting time to get to work in the cannabis industry.  Maybe you’re wondering how to land a job or maybe it’s time to make a career shift.  Here are some helpful steps to getting you in.

Research and Reframe

Even if you have never worked in the cannabis industry, there are many roles that are needing to be filled by talented, adaptable and experienced individuals who are able to transfer their skills.  When you begin to research the companies offering positions, start to bridge the gaps and make connections of how you could be useful to these potential companies. Due to the highly competitive nature of the industry and the growing attention on the industry, individuals who can confidently communicate their value as it relates to adding value to an organization will stand out.  Do your research and then reframe your skills, experiences and education to relate to what could be needed of you or asked of your positions of interest. Have fun in the process and become a detective.

Rework your Resume

Once you have a firm grasp of what you are looking for and how you can add value to the role and company you are targeting, rework your resume.  Finding a great fit doesn’t have to be difficult, yet if you believe it will be, you are already hurting your chances of a successful in. Prepare your resume to cater to the positions you are applying for and make sure you remember that recruiters and hiring managers don’t want to waste their time.  In fact, many of the businesses in the cannabis industry recognize the fast-paced landscape and understandably, are quick to reject unsuitable candidates. Prepare your best resume, keep it concise and be sure to cater it to the company and position as best you can.

Network

Currently, there are many groups, clubs, events and press conferences surrounding the industry.  It’s very helpful to know people and to craft genuine relationships with people who you can network with in the industry.  Search your local meetup groups, register for events you found in your research and place yourself in front of the kind of people who can connect you to your dream job.  This is very much a people business, so connecting and relating to those already in the industry can give you a significant boost in your success levels.
